The Economic and social council, or Ecosoc, is an organ of the United Nations. People participating in this branch are assigned to a committee where they get a topic such as commision on crime prevention or commision on the status of women and have to come up with two or more resolutions to help solve the situation. After the solutions have been made, the committee decides whether or not to keep or kill them. As soon as the solution is decided upon, it is recommended to member states of the United Nations.
Currently, Committee 1 of Ecosoc is tackling the topic of terrorism. The definition of terrorism is “the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a mean to create terror among masses of people.” Assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, bombings, bomb scares, cyber attacks, and the use of weapons such as chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological are all examples of terrorism. There are five different types of terrorism. The first is state sponsored terrorism, which are terrorist attacks on a state or government by another competing state or government. Next, is dissent terrorism, which is when terrorist groups rebel against their government. Also, there is terrorism and the right and left, which are groups rooted in political ideology. The fourth type is religious terrorism, which consists of extremely religiously motivated groups of people who want to go out and simply hurt. The last type of terrorism is criminal terrorism, which are acts used to aid in crime and criminal profit. All types of terrorism are frequently used to harm people and cause destruction. We have interviewed representatives from different countries in Ecosoc asking about their standpoint on terrorism. One of the delegates we interviewed was Calvin Jacobs, representing Somalia. He informed us that terrorism is a big part of their society. A terrorist group called Al Qaeda is a large terrorist group in Somalia. They have committed many attacks on countries and cities including shootings and bomb assaults very recently. According to Jacobs, Al Qaeda has a lot of power in what the government accomplishes. This is because if Somalia doesn’t abide by Al Qaeda’s rules, there can be a lot of violence. Jacobs also told us that Somalia is planning on preventing terrorism attacks by inviting the UN security members otherwise known as Security Council, to protect their airports and streets to maintain a safe environment and they will start background checking all of their government officials to help to help eradicate terrorism. In addition to interviewing Calvin Jacobs, we interviewed Abigail Hatra, a representative from the country of Qatar. Abigail told us that although Qatar has been accused many times of supporting multiple terrorist groups like ISIS, Al Qaeda, and Homis, Qatar does have laws against domestic terrorism. There have been many terrorist attacks throughout history with thousands of casualties. Most recently there was an attack in Sri Lanka. On April 21, 2019 a tragedy struck. Six different buildings across the war torn country of Sri Lanka were “victims” of a terrorist attack. The names of three of the buildings that were bombed included St. Anthony's, The Kingsbury, and Shangri-La. 253 people were killed and approximately 500 people were injured. To prevent this from happening again, “Sri Lanka’s security forces will conduct a house-to-house search to root out terrorists.” said Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka’s president. If all goes well, by the end of summitt, Committee 1 will have a way to help prevent and stop these attacks from injuring and killing multiple people.
