NGO: Access to Clean Water Delegates in NGO serve as members of a UN agency and work with their peers to create a non-governmental organization to solve worldwide problems. The particular problem NGO is focusing on right now is access to clean water. The water crisis around the world is a problem that reaches many people. Over 700 million people lack access to clean water around the world. Without clean water, basic tasks like washing your body or cooking food can be dangerous or fatal. Lack of clean water is also a major sanitation issue,as people can become seriously ill from waterborne diseases. These diseases include cholera and dysentery. However, there is hope with finding access to clean water. Around the world, different non-governmental organizations are trying to solve this problem. This water crisis has led Cambodia’s citizens to be lacking in access to clean water. 4 million out of the 16 million people in Cambodia have almost no access to clean water. Since approximately 80 percent of Cambodians live in rural and poor areas, they have a hard time finding contact with clean water. To solve this problem, a non-governmental organization called out a plan. This plan consisted of putting filters inside the bodies of water to make the water clean. When filtering the water, it will take out all of the germs so the water becomes potable. This plan has a more economical solution compared to other non-governmental organizations’ plans. The solution costs less money but still makes the water sanitary. It consists of using about 15-20 filters in the water. Putting these 15 to 20 filters in the water cleans out the water to make it sanitary. This water crisis has also spread to Afghanistan. Wars have been taking over the land, leaving Afghanistan without very much clean water. It affects women and girls because they are the ones that collect water to bring home. This causes them to not be able to get an education. Having less clean water has also left farmers out of work. Farmers can’t irrigate crops and do other basics in farming without fresh, clean water. Less farming means less food. With less food population would shrink and people can starve to the point where they die. The water crisis in Afghanistan has affected everyone that lives there. Haiti is a small island nation that has suffered multiple hurricanes and earthquakes over the past decade. It also deals with severe water problems including cholera in many major water supplies. One group of delegates has come up with the plan of passing out biodegradable life straws to the population. They clear out debris for dirty water as the drinker sucks water through the straw. It is highly effective because it removes 99.99% of microbial life and debris. This can make all water sanitary for people to access. It lasts for about four years with average use. That is because LifeStraw can filter up to 1,000 liters of water before its filters become ineffective. This solution for Haiti's cities allows access to clean water for everyone with a LifeStraw. The water crisis is a far-reaching crisis that takes place across the globe affecting 780 million people. This means without clean water, these 780 million people can suffer from dehydration or other sicknesses from dehydration. Overall, these are the solutions NGO has discovered and researched to reduce the amount of the globe affected by the access to clean water. Authors: Katelyn, Clarissa, Will, Alex, Dena, and Genesis
