The primary goal of the Security Council (SC) is to ensure international peace and security. It is composed of 15 members, five of which are permanent members, China, France, the US, Russia, and the UK. Ten temporary members are elected by the General Assembly (GA) for two-year terms. The current non-permanent members this year are Belgium, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Indonesia, Kuwait, Peru, Poland, and South Africa.
Currently, the Security Council is discussing the issue of Muslim internment camps in China. China has held many Muslims in the XinJing Province in these camps to “brainwash” them from their religion and reeducate them. These camps were also created as counterterrorism measures. China has forced these Muslims to do things against their will or against their religion. For example, during the Chinese New Year, Muslims were forced to eat pork and drink. They were also forced to support Communism. If they do not follow orders, they will receive punishments, sometimes as severe has not receiving food. Most of the countries in Security Council have given their opinion about these camps holding Muslims. Most of them oppose China’s measures, but a few countries don’t have an opinion, and only a smaller number of countries support it. Equatorial Guinea has similar problems with these Chinese internment camps and putting Muslims in them. Kuwait wants the Muslims to be released from the camps due to the fact that Islam is also the dominant religion in their country. Germany wants to solve this problem but keep its relationship with China, and the United Kingdom wishes to have a peaceful solution. The United States, South Africa, Peru, Poland, and the Dominican Republic do not support this action. France thinks it is wrong for China to target the Muslim minority group. The Russians believe this internment is incorrect, but at the same time, they respect the Chinese government’s sovereignty. Côte d'Ivoire says “no immediate action is necessary, but we do recommend more research be put into these camps.” In order to keep trading with China, Indonesia remains with no opinion on China’s decision. Lastly, China rejects all reasons for putting Muslims in these camps. China refuses to state reasons for internment camps and does not want other countries to interfere. The debate in SC was very intense with many opinions voiced. A resolution has not been created yet; this is a on going story. By Group 4
