The 1992 war between Iran and America sparked a few major disputes. One of the most notable was the oil platform dispute. During the war, America destroyed some of Iran’s oil platforms. This crippled Iran’s business and set them back many billions of dollars. Each one of Iran’s oil platforms generates between 1-6 billion dollars each year. Iran’s oil business provides 48% percent of their yearly income. America has intel that says Iran was using their oil platforms as a way to launch missiles at incoming ships. Iran was blowing up incoming boats of all nations as a way of preventing attack on their country. After Iran bombed a couple of American ships, America then blew up some of Iran’s oil platforms that were being used to launch missiles. America says that this was an act of self defense, and that Iran attacked first. Iran says the opposite and is trying to sue the U.S. for the damages they caused during the war to their oil platforms. The amount that Iran is suing for is to be determined in court.
Iran was bombing incoming ships as a way to prevent possible attacks. Iran has reason to believe that future attacks were a possibility, so they took preventive measures. Iran’s solution was to use their precious oil platforms that provide 48% of their yearly income, to launch missiles at incoming ships. After they destroyed a few American ships, America retaliated by blowing up their oil platforms. Iran feels this attack was unprovoked and that America should pay for their losses. These attacks from the U.S. made a huge economic struggle for Iran. Iran also says that the retaliation was way overboard and that it was “Instead of it being an eye for an eye, they (U.S.) took a life for an eye”. Iran says that they were not purposely targeting U.S. ships and that they were bombing them at random. Iran feels that the U.S. took it to personally, and overreacted. America feels that the Iranian attacks on the ships bearing U.S. flags was unprovoked. The U.S. also says that by blowing up ships without being provoked, Iran violated the Treaty of Amity. The Treaty of Amity (Peace) states that neither side can attack the other without provocation. Iran broke this treaty by attacking American ships. America feels that because of this, they had a good reason to attack Iran’s oil platforms. Iran says that it was an unfair retaliation and that America overreacted. America only attacked the oil platforms because that is where the missiles were being launched. Iran shouldn’t have used the platforms as a missile base, and fired the missiles, if they didn’t want them to be blown up. This is why America is refusing to pay for the damages caused. By Group 5
